It’s December once again. The holidays are upon us, and ever since I was a little girl, I associated Christmastime with how Christmas carols sung by the Jackson 5 would fill the radio airwaves. Songs like “Give Love On Christmas Day,” “The Christmas Song,” “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause,” and “Someday at Christmas” are just a few of those familiar songs that Michael Jackson has performed in his trademark soulful voice that never fail to warm my heart during this season. Then again, it has never been a secret that I have always been a fan of any of Michael Jackson’s songs. I’ve appreciated this artist since I was five years old. Whenever I listen to any song, I can’t help but think about him. Maybe because I also connected what I love about music with this versatile artist, and to this day, I mull over his passing.
Last night, I received a gift from my husband, it was a belated anniversary gift, he said. To my surprise and immense delight, it was the DVD film “Michael Jackson: The Life of An Icon,” produced by David Gest, one of Michael’s closest friends. He also produced Michael’s 30th Anniversary Special back in 2002, which was one of the highest rated music specials on television.
Watching this film made me cry. If you happen to be a die-hard Michael Jackson fan like I am, this DVD is something you ought to purchase. It contains interviews with Gest himself, and from Michael’s family, his mohter Katherine, oldest sister Rebbie, and oldest brother Tito share their personal stories about Michael.
Filled with interesting anecdotes about his days as a superstar in the Jackson Five, his quirks, fondness for child-like things, and even details and video clips from his court cases, marriages to Lisa Marie Presley and Debbie Rowe, and interviews with great artists from Motown who got to know, loved and believed in him…this film celebrates Michael Jackson, in his frailties as a person, in his larger-than-life dreams and views as a spectacular performer, and how much he meant to the people closest to him.
Whether or not you agree that he was innocent of all the things that people accused him of, you will, no doubt, still be left in awe after watching this film because it presents not only how brilliant he was a performer, but also his generous and giving humanitarian heart. And how ultimately true it is that fame truly has its price.
Also, if you collect Michael Jackson memorabilia and cds and dvds like I do, feel free to check out the double CD of his remastered hits remixed especially for Cirque Du Soleil’s “The Immortal” World Tour.
Someday I hope I’ll be able to watch this wonderful show. Sometimes, I still find it difficult to imagine that Michael Jackson is gone. But truly he was able to immortalize himself through his beautiful music, that has inspired and will continue to inspire generations to come.
